This scenario was a meeting engagement. There were three primary objectives; all were small villages. I ran the Soviet forces that approached, occupied, and was almost completely repelled from the village on the left flank. We approached with a company of T34s ('43) and 4 SU152s. The T34s approached at high speed and tool up reasonable positions. Meanwhile, the two pairs of SU152s took up positions on hills behind and supporting the units in the village. Unfortunately, for most of the game, the SU152s had trouble setting up in hull down positions. The enemy approached with a company of late war Panzer IIIs plus 2 Tigers. The Panzers took up defensive positions just outside the village behind a light hedgerow. Meanwhile, the Tigers crawled down the road and attracted fire from T34s in the village. The first shot immobilized the lead Tiger and then the tigers opened up. Metal went flying as a T34 was crushed. With the event of the the approaching Tigers, the company of T34s decided to shift to the right and take up positions in a nearby hedgerow and out of site of the Tigers. This was an expensive maneuver as several T34s were taken out by the time the move was completed. With the reduced numbers of T34s, close range, and the objective not taken (by the Germans) the Panzer IIIs approached the T34s and the village, and in the process, taking out all of the T34s except for one and occupying almost all of the village. By this time, two of the SU152s had approached and entered the village from the right flank. One was destroyed by a Tiger, and the other was hit by a Panzer III with no effect. Finally, the SU152 got off a point blank shot on a Panzer and destroyed it. Meanwhile, one of the SU152s back on the hill lobbed off a shot and took out another Panzer III. In the end, the Soviet losses on this flank were about 70% and the German losses were probably under 50%
The game ran very smoothly and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The group of guys were all fun to game with and Pete kept the game going ant a nice clip.
